Film Industry: Black Widow

  1) Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Sound and lots of VFX companies. 2) A conglomerate is a big company that owns lots of smaller companies. Black Widow features lots of production teams that are subsidiaries of Disney/Marvel. 3) The special effects, the celebrity actors, and the soundtrack. 4 a) Trailers Trailers have been the standard way to advertise a movie for a long time. It's pretty much a necessity if you want anyone to see or hear about your movie. 4b) Star Interviews/Power Interviews with the cast attracts fans of said actors to watch/read the interview and then potentially get interested in watching the movie being advertised. Star power works basically the same way as those fans will see their favourite actor in that movie which gives them a motive to watch it. 4c) Audience Promotion Promoting good reviews from audience members has been quite an uncommon thing as big studios typically push out reviews from critics more often. This has been e...

You are very passionate about the subject and you offer very interesting ideas. I think you will particularly enjoy the close study products when we get to them, especially the video games unit. It was lovely hearing you say that this was your favourite subject this year. I hope this continues throughout the course. EBI: Just lacking detail in your blog posts that we need to work on. Just ensure that you have used your exercise book and the notes on Media Macguffin to ensure you are answering in plenty of detail. If we can add that extra bit of detail you will be able to achieve maybe exceed your target grade. LR:   Copy and paste this feedback into a new blogpost called ‘Blog feedback and learner response’. Then, set aside some time to go back and complete missing or unfinished work. Finally, as your learner response, write what you think the most difficult...

Industries: Ownership and Control

  1) Why did Facebook buy Instagram for $1bn in 2012? Facebook bought Instagram back then because they knew social media was a very popular and growing market that they could cash in on. 2) What are the benefits for media companies of vertical integration? The company owns lots of different types of media and is most likely a conglomerate. They could probably own TV stations, streaming services, film/music studios, and more. This allows them to have more creative freedom and thus, make a lot more money. 3) What are the benefits for media companies of horizontal integration? Horizontal integration is when a company purchases another company. For example, Facebook bought Oculus in 2014 as they knew VR technology would be the future and they could cash in on a potential future market. Audience Effects Theory

1) Audiences who passively take in information from the media; these messages have the same effect on everyone 2) Audiences who interact with and make choices based on the type of media they consume 3) Audiences that are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producers as if it was injected into their minds 4)  Information/Surveillance: The Times Newspaper Why? It tells audiences important info about politics, the world, and more. Personal Identity: Why?  Diversion/Entertainment: Virtual Reality Why? The audience might want to escape from their reality and do something that they normally can't (e.g. SUPERHOT VR, Beat Saber, Pavlov, Half Life Alyx) Relationships:  Reality TV Why?  The audience might be invested in the drama that the characters experience and might possibly relate to them 5) Visceral pleasure - the audience watching this documentary might be viewing it for the scary and frightening facts and animals in the sea. There are a lot ...

Media Assessment LR

1) WWW: Good first assessment, Dyari - lots of analysis using denotation and connotation of media texts. Good response on why charities use children in advertising (Q5) EBI: More media terminology needed throughout your response (e.g. Q5, medium close up camera shot) 2) Marks: Q1) 0 Q2) 1 Q3) 5 Q4) 2 Q5) 2 Q6) 4 3) I did better on question 3 as I dove more into the connotations of the image; however I did not score higher as I didn't fully describe what the image connotes.  4) I did worse on question 5 as I didn't fully link my answer to media terms that refer to camera shots or mise-en-scene. I didn't use enough media terminology in that question. 5) I got around 5 marks on question 5; that's just between 4 and 6, meaning I'm level 2. This meant that my analysis was satisfactory, talking more about obvious/straight forward connotations. This also meant my focus on meanings/connotations in general was inconsistent, and I also used media terminology in a satisfacto...

Reception Theory

  1)  "Preferred" media is the message/ideology/belief the producers want the audience to believe 2) "Oppositional" media is when the consumer takes away an opposite message or belief different to what the producers intended 3) With disgust and/or disliking them as they are portrayed as the villains 4) They might be opposed to the typical "teenager" stereotype as not all teens do crime or misbehave On one hand, a part of the audience might be in the preferred/dominant group. This is because they might see this advert, and want to go out and try it, for reasons such as because it's new, they simply enjoy fast food or they just find the burger appealing. This group is the type companies/advertisers want. On the other hand, a part of the audience might be in the negotiated group; they probably debating whether or not they should try it, as they think fast food is unhealthy, expensive or not tasty, yet they're persuaded to try it. While they're wil...
