1) What is independent cinema and how is it different to Hollywood blockbusters?

Independent cinema consists of films that are made by individuals/independent film studios and are typically much, much lower in budget than your typical Hollywood blockbuster. Hollywood blockbusters consists of films with a very high budget, being made by big companies/studios.

2) What is I, Daniel Blake about?

I, Daniel Blake is a story about a 59 year old man named Daniel Blake who needs help with his illness. He runs into Katie and her 2 children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie's only chance to leave her one roomed homeless hostel is to accept a flat 300 miles away. Daniel fights for his dignity, which will transform the lives of Katie and her 2 young children.

3) Who directed I, Daniel Blake and why is this important?

Ken Loach directed I, Daniel Blake.

This is important as Ken Loach tells stories about ordinary people and the many problems they face daily. His goal was never to make money, but to expose the dark truth about society and bring light to the issues he covers.

4) How was I, Daniel Blake promoted to an audience?

- They organised free screenings across the UK to emphasise the film's meaning

- The film was premiered not only in London, but in Newcastle, where the film is set

- Jeremy Corbyn attended the London premiere

- "I, Daniel Blake" was projected onto the houses of parliament

- Ken Loach appeared on BBC Question Time to further talk about the message of the film

5) What unusual or creative marketing campaigns/methods were used?

a) Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party attended the premiere; it was quite unusual and might've gotten people to see the film

b) "I, Daniel Blake" being projected onto the houses of parliament was certainly unusual and might've gotten people curious enough to look into what it meant and potentially could've gotten them to see the film after researching it

c) A video was released containing a compilation of many people who supported the film's message. This might've gotten people to see the film as seeing how many people supported it's message could've gotten them curious enough to look into it more; which would also potentially motivate them to see the film

6) What was the estimated production budget for I, Daniel Blake and how much did it earn at the box office?

I, Daniel Blake's production budget is hard to pinpoint, but it is estimated to be around £2 million. The film made back around £11 million in the box office worldwide.

7) How can independent films like I, Daniel Blake compete with blockbusters like Black Widow?

They can compete with blockbusters as they could be quite a bit more interesting to watch, and the message they convey could be more meaningful. Plus, a lot of people want to support small studios and individuals.

8) In your opinion, was I, Daniel Blake a success?

Considering it made back almost 6 times it's original production budget, I'd say it was a success.

Why would an audience like it?   It appealed to it's audience for it's story and characters.
