Statement of Intent

My fantasy TV drama will be called ‘Like a Paladin’. It will be aired on a few different TV channels like Sky Max and BBC One, and selected streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. The sequence I have planned out will be played near the end of the first episode. The 2-minute sequence will consist of a chase scene by a member from an evil, authoritative government, looking to steal a sacred treasure from the main character. The protagonist has a fraction of the full artefact; they’re looking for more fragments to power up further and fix the dystopian world they live in.

My protagonist is a teen who’s on a mission to turn their lives around for themselves and the people around them after discovering a sacred artefact. The use of teenagers will make my target audience, teenagers, feel a sense of identity (Blumler and Katz) as they can relate easier to the main character. The protagonist’s goal attracts “The Succeeder” audience (Young and Rubicam) as their achievements may inspire audiences to do their hardest too. A male lead subverts stereotypes as teenage boys lack confidence, so seeing someone with such bravery/strength will inspire others to be the same. The antagonist is an employee of the evil corporation managing the city.

The scene will take place inside of a woodland area. This creates suspense/tension due to the mysterious location, and emphasises the fear of the unknown which reinforces the fantasy genre. Additionally, I’ll use over the shoulder shots and long shots to show power to create a sense of thrill, which gives the audience visceral pleasure as they’ll see the protagonist in such grave danger. To better exemplify this, I will use high angles for the main character, to make them seem weaker, and use low angles for the villain to make them seem more powerful. This makes the antagonist seem like a proper threat. When characters are running/turning corners/retaliating (diegetic sound), music will be added to thrill the audience (non-diegetic sound). By using non-diegetic/diegetic sound I can combine elements of action/thriller and intertwine it with the fantasy genre.

His Dark Materials: Language and Representation blog tasks

Language and close-textual analysis 1) Camerawork, editing and sound: The camera work in this episode is very dynamic. The camera tends to focus a lot on the characters, either in a close up shot, over the shoulder or showing their full bodies. It has been done in this way to presumably give more of a focus on their dialogue and actions in a more dramatic and serious sense, as it is a TV drama. Mise-en-scene: The scenarios shown in this episode are quite gloomy, historic and lonely. The city, which is the location where the majority of the episode takes place, is quite empty, abandoned and old looking. The characters here also look quite nervous and/or always on alert, considering the setting they're in. Narrative and genre: The episode focuses on a city in the sky in which its inhabitants either fled or had their souls stolen by "Spectres", which means the city is very empty and is only really filled with children/teens. The episode also focuses on other worldly creatu

Preliminary exercise feedback and learner response

  1)  WWW: You have displayed some excellent editing and technical skills throughout this preliminary exercise. In particular, the technical editing skills you demonstrated when changing the colour grading and producing match-on-action for the chase which was a requirement for the preliminary exercise brief.  EBI: The biggest improvement needs to be ensuring you film content outside of school to establish the fantasy genre and not limit yourself to filming at school; this will improve the overall quality of your coursework project. The other thing to work on is audio levels. The dialogue was difficult to hear at the end because of the soundtrack being too loud. Most of the feedback in class was complaining about the sound at the end. 2)  WWW: - I have edited the preliminary task very well. - I demonstrated key skills that are essential for the real coursework. - I have met the brief guidelines. EBI: - I need to film scenes outside of school. - I need to work on balancing audio. - I sho
